about
The group’s debut single “On Your Level” boasts hooky piano motifs and stately 1960s R&B-style horns. Here, songwriter Micah Motenko lays out an infectious and glowering “Ain’t Misbehavin’” type narrative arc aimed at an ex. “When I wrote this song, I felt like I had just been trying to please everyone else all the time without paying attention to what I needed. I felt no sense of direction in my life,” he shares. “This song is defiant in the face of that. It’s about putting aside everything that’s keeping you down for a night and showing someone else a good time.”
Micah is joined onstage, and in the studio, by three mainstays of the Austin music scene. Guitarist Cat Clemons III’s play-for-the-song restraint and stanky grooves provide just the right amount of flair, and the in-the-pocket telepathic interplay of bassist Josh Flowers and drummer James Gwyn rounds out the soul machine.
lyrics
Kept inside
By my window
Bleed me dry, ‘till I’m old
But tonight, I’m on your level baby
Won’t you show me what I’ve been missing
I’ve been on the inside looking out, upon you and me
‘Till I go on the road
In this town
It’s like a pillow
Sleep so sound
But you can’t wake up
But tonight, I’m on your level baby
Won’t you take me inside your home
‘Cause I’ll follow you, to the bottom keep on smiling
‘Till I lose my control
Feel alive
No more pain
I free my mind
At the expense of my brain
But tonight, I’m on your level baby
Now I’ll show you something, you can believe in
Because now I take my strides nice and slow like they do down the street
'Till I find me a home

The latest from JP Bimeni could be a lost soul classic; Bimeni’s voice is warm & soaring, surrounded by darting horns & simmering drums. Bandcamp New & Notable Oct 29, 2018
